My Take

Always a Buy.

Buffalo Trace is the bottle I measure the rest of the shelf against. It is smooth from start to finish, and every pour is a flavor bomb of spices, vanilla, and brown sugar. At 90 proof it never pushes too hard — it just delivers.

At $28.95, this is the value conversation in bourbon. Same Mash Bill #1 as Eagle Rare, no age statement, and it drinks like a bottle that should cost twice as much. Oregon gets a good stock of it, so it is readily available — and at this price, it comes home with me every time.

This is the bottle I hand to someone new to bourbon, and the one I reach for when I do not want to think about it. Neat, on a cube, or in an Old Fashioned — it does all three without breaking a sweat.

The Backstory

The Flagship That Started the Frenzy.

Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon is the flagship bottle of Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, made by Sazerac. It uses the distillery's low-rye Mash Bill #1 — the same recipe behind Eagle Rare — and is bottled at 90 proof with no age statement.

The name honors the ancient buffalo trails that crossed the Kentucky River near the distillery site. The distillery itself traces its roots to 1775, making it one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States.
